Towing From Private Property
Your Car Can Be Towed For Unauthorized Parking On Private Property
Private property owners sometimes hire Diversified Towing & Recovery to keep parking lots or access lanes clear of unauthorized users. This can include cars parking in another tenant's spot in an apartment complex or vehicles not following posted parking rules.
Even without posted rules, the owner may contact a towing company or local law enforcement to remove a vehicle parked on their private property without permission.
Note that procedures and regulations for towing and impounding vehicles may vary by city and county in Iowa.

Recent Changes to notification and retrieval process
Section 2 & 3 – Notice & Reclaiming Timelines
- Reduces the timeframe for police or private entities to send certified mail notice of a seized vehicle from 20 days to 10 days.
- Extends the vehicle/property reclamation period for owners and lienholders from 10 days to 20 days after notice. After the 20-day period, all rights, title, and claims to the vehicle are forfeited.
Section 4 – Lienholder Inspections, Personal Property Reclamation, Display of Charges
- Lienholder Inspection: Allows lienholders of record to request a vehicle condition inspection for a fee not to exceed $100. Private entities must accommodate the request by providing physical access to the vehicle or clear photographs.
- Personal Property Retrieval: Allows registered owners to retrieve unattached personal property from inside the vehicle one time during the 20-day reclamation period during normal business hours. Eligible items include prescription medications, medical or mobility equipment, childcare items, work clothing, identification documents, phones, laptops/tablets, work tools, wallets, tax and financial documents, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and non-vehicle keys.
- Display of Charges: Requires private towing entities to clearly post daily storage fees and impound-related charges at their business location and make the same information available on their website so customers can easily view applicable fees.
